Implicit biases are unconscious attitudes that affect our decisions in a number of areas including the criminal justice system, workplace, education, health care system, sports and direct clinical practice. Blind spots affect our ability to turn implicit bias into explicit bias. Topics covered include: changing demographics and the need to move beyond blind spots; implicit bias and the brain; implicit bias awareness and intervention strategies; how a search for strengths can diminish implicit biases in the clinical relationship; research on implicit biases and implications for clinical practice. This seminar can be applied toward the IDFPR ethics and cultural competency requirement for social workers and counselors. [2 PD or 2 CE]
