Check, Mate! Chess Camp

There are many benefits to playing chess. In this one-day program we will teach campers how the pieces move and learn the objective of the game. We will spend time playing and answering questions. By the end of the day, you will be ready to take on your next opponent! Kids will also get a chance to meet another youth player who has played chess for many years, including participating in competitions. Class will be led by Dan Retoff, IVCC Chess Club Sponsor. Whether outgoing or quiet, physically small or large, kids of all backgrounds, coordinated or not, play and excel at chess. As well as developing a host of useful skills such as planning and problem solving, pattern recognition, creative and strategic thinking, and abstract reasoning, kids learn sportsmanship, how to win and lose, turn-taking and patience. Chess is inexpensive to play and can be played offscreen or on. Campers will also receive a list of resources to continue improving game strategy and keep playing all summer long.
