This is the third module of a seven-part Industrial Electrician Certificate offered in a Competency-Based education format. This approach allows students to progress at their own pace by demonstrating their skills and knowledge, making it ideal for those with prior experience to earn credentials.

Topics covered include: Introduction to AC Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), including their function, components, operation, applications, and types of variable speed AC drives. Manual operation of VFDs using a keypad, including changing speed and direction, startup, enablement, shutdown, and basic parameter viewing and editing. PLC-controlled 2- and 3-wire VFD operation, including interpreting PLC programs and wiring schematics, configuring VFD parameters, monitoring operation, and performing normal, emergency, and pause functions. Multi-speed operation, motor speed control, acceleration and deceleration, S-curve acceleration, braking, troubleshooting VFD errors, resetting drives after faults, and understanding the effects of frequency and VFD output on motor performance.
