Discover the remarkable stories of three individuals whose connections to the Illinois Valley left a lasting impact far beyond our region. Learn about philanthropists Alvin and Libby Carus and their enduring legacy of community service, education, conservation, and the arts. Explore the life and career of Captain John L. McCormick, a visionary businessman in Peru’s early years. He contributed to the growth of Peru, became mayor and hosted Stephen Douglas the night before his first debate with Abraham Lincoln. Then journey to the stars with Clyde Tombaugh, the Streator native whose discovery of Pluto transformed astronomy and inspired generations of scientists. Through photographs, historical accounts, and fascinating stories, this engaging lecture celebrates the vision, innovation, and generosity of these local legends while highlighting the important role LaSalle County has played in shaping history.
