John Dean Caton (1812-1895) was a Judge for most of his life. However, he was involved in so many other things! He played a substantial role in the establishment of the Illinois and Mississippi Telegraph Co., raised elk on his large north bluff estate in Ottawa, was an acquaintance of Abraham Lincoln, and many other things! While LaSalle County has had its share of famous people who have made positive contributions to society, it has also had its share of the “bad and the ugly.” This session will focus on those for whom the law was there to be flaunted: gamblers, murderers, con men, bank robbers, and mobsters. Hear about the last hanging in the county, the life of Ottawa native John Looney whose story was portrayed in the movie Road to Perdition, how LaSalle earned the nickname “Little Reno,” and others, including the infamous Al Capone, who thrived in the underworld of LaSalle County.

Presented by Molllie Perrot (Ottawa Historical & Scouting Heritage Museum) and Lorraine McCallister (Reddick Mansion)
